Making of the Music

What hymn was published nearly seven centuries after the lyrics were first written?

In 1225, St. Francis of Assisi wrote what may have been the first piece of literature penned in the Italian language: “Canticle of the Sun.” It was a song that glorified the God of creation, reflective of Psalm 96, “Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad.”

Nearly seven hundred years later, in 1919, an English translation by William Draper was published in the Public School Hymn Book. Draper wrote the song, “All Creatures of Our God and King,” for children to sing during the Whitsun festival—the church’s celebration of Pentecost.

How wonderful it is to know that we are joining with eight centuries of Christians who’ve also sung the words, “Oh praise Him! Alleluia!”
