Worthy Love

Psalm 97:10 tells us, “Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.”

The unregenerate cannot love their neighbors. For a while they are kind to their bodies, yet they have no love for their souls – and is this worthy to be called love?

It is as if one’s friend or child should have a careful look to the heel and let the brain suffer. Carnal parents that pamper their children’s bodies and store great portions for them but let their souls welter in sin and die and perish for want of instruction, admonition, prayer, and example – is this to be called love?

The magistrate who is friendly to all the country, and keeps a good house all the year, and yet suffers sin to reign and houses of disorder to abound in his country, the Sabbath to be profaned, and cares for none of those things, call you this love?

The negligent [one] that gives money to the poor, keeps good hospitalities among his neighbors, and yet suffers their souls to famish for want of breaking to them the Bread of Life… this is hatred and not love.
