Fair as the Moon

We read in Song of Solomon 6:10, “Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun?”

In Genesis 1:16 we read, “And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night.”

The greater light was the sun; the lesser light was the moon. In the Song of Solomon, we see that these two heavenly bodies have a symbolic meaning, and a spiritual counterpart. They speak of Christ and His Church.

Jesus is called the “Sun of Righteousness” (Mal 4:2) and “the light of the world.” (John 8:12 and John 12:46). He gave light to the earth while He was here in the days of His flesh (John 9:5), and will also be the source of illumination in the ages to come (Revelation 21: 23).

However, while He is away, we [as believers] are to reflect His glory and “shine as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:15 and Matthew 5:14).

As you know, the moon itself is a dead planet. It only has light and heat as it reflects the sun. So, too, we only have light and joy and spiritual warmth as we reflect the Lord Jesus Christ.

The only time the moon does not shine is when there is an eclipse; that is, when the earth comes between the sun and the moon. In like manner, when there is spiritual coldness [in our life], it is usually due to the fact that the “world” or sin, has come between the Lord and us!

Is your spiritual life undergoing a chilling “eclipse,” or are you walking “in the light” (I John 1:7) and shining for Jesus as “fair as the moon”?
