Baptism, I believe, is a symbol of what God has done or will hopefully do when we trust Him as Lord and Saviour. Baptism is cleansing that we receive when we trust that the shed blood of Christ was for our sins and heartily repent of sin. Water baptism is simply an outward sign of the hoped forgivess of God.
