Moms were God’s idea from the very beginning. Have you ever thought about that? There are so many things in life that didn’t exist prior to the fall of man in Genesis chapter three. There was no currency, no trading, no borrowing. There was no sickness and therefore no medicines, no prescriptions. There was no educational industry—the man and woman had perfect fellowship with the greatest teacher imaginable, God. No clothing or shelter needed. No need to prepare food—just pick and eat. They wanted for nothing!
What did exist before sin entered the world? Family. A man and a woman who would become the father and mother of all the living. Family—and motherhood—was God’s pure and perfect idea from the beginning.
But motherhood in the first two chapters of Genesis is even more significant than that. When God created light, earth, and water, the text says, “God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:4, 10). When He created vegetation, the heavenly lights, and creatures to fill the sea, soar the sky, and graze the land, He saw that it was good (Genesis 1:12, 18, 21, 25). God created man in His image, male and female, and gave them dominion over His creation. “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).
In chapter two of Genesis, we find the zoomed-in perspective of God creating the first man and woman. Man was created first, and among all of God’s good creation, He says something startling: “It is not good…”
And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” – Genesis 2:18
The Hebrew word for helper used in Genesis 2:18 to describe humanity’s first woman is used frequently throughout the Old Testament to describe God as rescuer. In Psalm 33:20, David says, “Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.” In Psalm 70:5, David cries out to God,
“But I am poor and needy;
Make haste to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay.”
In Hosea 13:9, God says, “O Israel, you are destroyed, but your help is from Me.”
When God designed mothers, he had rescuers in mind. He was filling a gap of love, protection, deliverance, and nurturing that could not be filled by fathers alone. God knows the heart of a mother because He created her. He designed her.
There are times when mothers are tempted to see themselves as insignificant. Perhaps society doesn’t recognize her value appropriately. But here’s the truth—without mothers we would be in trouble. We would need rescuing.
The call to motherhood is a high calling. Evangelists, pastors, businessmen, politicians, builders, royalty—none of those roles existed in God’s original design for humanity. And none of those people today arrived without a mother! Every accomplishment worthy of praise—thanks should be given to a mother. Our Heavenly Father didn’t send His Son down as a teenager, ready for ministry. He picked a young woman named Mary and called her to be the mother of Jesus.
God loves mothers. And you would be hard-pressed to find a more significant calling than the call to be a mother. Today, on Mother’s Day 2025, the Family Radio team wants to honor every mom through prayer. Will you join us?
Lord, we lift young, expecting mothers before you today. We pray You would be their peace in times of worry. Be their joy in times of anticipation. Be their bright hope for tomorrow as they look forward into a future holding more in store than they could possibly imagine.
Lord, we lift mothers to You who have experienced loss. We pray You would be their comforter in times of grief. We ask You to give them purpose in their pain—that they would know the healing that can only come by the work of Your Holy Spirit.
Lord, we pray for moms who are overwhelmed. Whether they are feeling stuck in the motions of raising babies, trying to balance work and home life, or feeling like they’re failing when they aren’t—we ask You to keep them in Your perfect peace as they fix their vision on You.
Lord, we pray for mothers who are watching their daughters become wives and mothers. We ask You to give them wisdom from Heaven to encourage the next generation, and the generation after that. We pray for moments of great joy and rejuvenated life as mothers enjoy grandmotherhood.
And Lord, we pray for single mothers. We pray for the sufficiency of Your grace to be imparted into their lives. We ask You to bring community around single mothers to strengthen them, encourage them, and give them resources to accomplish their calling well. We pray for rest, and for the joys that come every morning.
Lord, thank You for the gift of mothers. Everything You do is good, every gift You give is undeserved and greatly appreciated. For the gift of mothers, we bless You, Lord. We give You glory and praise.
Amen.
