We read in Acts 17:31, “Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.” By what standard will God judge the unsaved? By His Holy Law! The Bible declares in Romans 6:23,“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The second death that Romans 6:23 is speaking about is eternal damnation. This will take place on Judgment Day. The unsaved will receive exactly what is due to them. And no one will enter God’s Holy Heaven who is not redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. The only solution for someone to escape this Day of Judgment is to find a sin covering, an all-sufficient substitute. And the only Substitute there is for unsaved man is the Lord Jesus Christ.
In Isaiah 53:5,10-11 we see a vivid picture of the Lord Jesus Christ undergoing the wrath of God on behave of His people, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.” Their sins were imputed to Christ. He was punished in their stead. God’s Holy law is satisfied since Christ is the sinless substitute.
