The passage from where Jesus took this quote from (Deuteronomy 8:1-3) is a reading in the Bible where Jehovah emphasizes the importance of our obedience to all of His commandments if we want to live. Do you think Jesus is referring to physical life when He answered the devil? Certainly not! Nevertheless in His great wisdom and love He knows to provide us with physical bread also as Jehovah provided the Israelites with manna in the dessert to sustain them physically. But more importantly He has given us His only begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ also known as the Word of God (Revelation 19:12).

So what distinguishes a true Christian from the rest of mankind? We have Jesus, the Word who became flesh (John 1:1 & 14). And because we have Jesus, we who partake of His flesh (the words that He has spoken unto us) have eternal life (John 6:47-63). It is Jesus who sustains us, not only in this present life on earth but all throughout eternity future. Therefore brothers and sisters in Christ, fuel up for the long run ahead. Rice, meat and vegetables will only take you a certain distance, but the Holy Bible will take you all the way to eternity!
